How To Make A Hidden Folder On Your Mac OS X
Hey Randy McKown here and in this video tutorial I have a really cool Mac tip for you. What we’re going to do is create a secret hidden folder right on your desktop. Maybe you have things you want quick access to but you don’t want to leave laying around for anybody to find. You might just want to have a clean looking desktop or if you’re a you tuber like me, you might want your desktop clear for when you’re doing screen casts and video tutorials like this one.
The first thing we’re going to do is create a new folder on our desktop by right clicking and choosing New Folder. Now, press Command+Shift+3 to take a screen capture of your desktop. If you’ve changed your system defaults to something other than a PNG you’re going to want to change this back temporarily. If you need help with that just watch my video on How to Change the default screen capture on Mac OS X.
Ok now that we have our screen capture open it up in preview by double clicking it. First thing, we don’t need this file to be so big so click on Tools … Adjust size .. and we’re going to just make this smaller.
Now press Command+A to select the entire image .. press delete .. now press Command+A again to select the empty area. Now press Command+C to copy it to the clipboard. Next go back and right click on the folder and select Get info. Click on the folder icon and you will see it now has this blue glow around it. Press Command+V to paste the empty image data.
Ok the folder is now invisible but we can still see the text below. So let’s just change that by holding down our space key. Now your folder is completely invisible. The only way we can interact with this folder is to actually click where the text is supposed to be. So, I’m just going to click and drag on my screen to find it and now I can grab the title and drag it somewhere where I won’t forget like up here in the corner. Now let’s drag my top secret document into my hidden folder. Now it’s completely hidden from anyone who happens to come across my Mac. To open the folder just double click the title and there we can see is my Top Secret document.
Another thing I will point out is that this folder is completely hidden. So, let’s go to the desktop in Finder and you can see that it’s not showing up, there’s nothing there.
