Share a Mouse and Keyboard Between Macs with Teleport
Looking for a way to share a mouse and keyboard between Macs? Teleport might be the solution for you. It’s completely free and in this Mac Tutorial I’m going to show you how to set it up.
Share a Mouse and Keyboard Between Macs
You will need to install Teleport on all the Macs you want to control. After you have downloaded Teleport, double-click the teleport.prefPane.
System Preferences will pop open and allow you to install Teleport.
Next you will need to check both the options for Activate Teleport and Share this Mac. At this point, you should repeat the process on all of the Macs you want to share a mouse and keyboard between. In the example below, I’m looking at my iMac screen and you can see that Teleport has also been activated / shared on my Macbook Pro.
Now that we have Teleport installed on all our Macs, we want to arrange the layout of how they will be controlled. It makes sense to arrange them as they are in real life. My Macbook Pro sits to the left of me on my desk. From the Teleport Layout screen I just drag the image of my Macbook Pro and place it to the left of my iMac. I then do the same thing from the copy of Teleport that is installed on my Macbook Pro.
Now Sharing a Mouse and Keyboard Between Macs
Once that’s done, you can close out the System Preferences on all your Macs. In my example, I can now drag my cursor off the left side of my iMac screen and it will appear on the Macbook Pro, giving me control of that system using both the mouse and keyboard attached to my iMac. To take control of my iMac I simply move the cursor back to my iMac screen using the mouse that is attached to my iMac.
What if instead of regaining control of the iMac by using the mouse attached to it, I use the Macbook Pro trackpad to move the cursor over to the iMac screen? What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard on the MacbookPro is now controlling the iMac. However, the mouse and keyboard attached to my iMac is also controlling my iMac.
Ok so what exactly does that mean? It means that I can take advantage of using gestures on my iMac without the use of a Magic Trackpad. I can benefit from gestures with my left hand, using the Macbook Pro trackpad, and control the cursor with the mouse in my right hand. Pretty cool .. I just saved myself $70 in iMac accessories !!
Sharing Files Between Macs
Not only can I share the mouse and keyboard but I can also drag and drop files between screens on my Macs now. When I do this I’m not actually moving the files. I’m simply copying them from one system to another. You might find this to be a faster method than by using the AirDrop features already built into the Mac Finder.
